Good Samaritan Missionary Baptist Church History
Good Samaritan Missionary Baptist Church began in the spirit, heart,, and mind of its founder, Pastor Walter J Witherspoon. He talked about his dream and vision of building a church to those who were closest to him while he was still pastor of Southside Baptist Church. It became the desire of those who believed his dream and vision to build a church. After leaving Southside Baptist Church, Pastor Witherspoon began to meet for prayer, Sunday school and organizational meetings in his home. April 2, 1957, a meeting was held for the purpose of organizing a church for the good of the community. In attendance at the meeting were: Mrs. Dorothy Berry, Mr. Simpson, Mr. William Spencer, Mr. Charles Fue, Mr. & Mrs. Edward Miller, Mr. & Mrs. Caples, Mrs. Valentine, Mrs. Dorothy Davis and Pastor and Mrs. Witherspoon. According to Pastor & Mrs. Witherspoon, there were six children and five adults present at the first Sunday school session. As the Sunday school grew, the home of Pastor & Mrs. Witherspoon became too small to hold the Sunday school. Willis Chapel was offered for the sum of $2500.00 with a $500.00 down payment. It was agreed upon to pay $250.00 down and collect $1.00 per week until the full down payment was reached. The name of the church would be Good Samaritan Baptist Church. The Old Willis chapel was purchased and occupied in 1959. We worshiped in the Old Willis Chapel facilities until the basement of the current facility was completed in 1965. The sanctuary was completed in 1970. Once a vision, once a dream, oh what a blessed reality!
